The phenomenon of fluent speech in individuals who stutter is often observed during singing, shouting, whispering, swearing, or choral speaking, suggesting alternative speech modalities can influence fluency.

iCanSpeak Live replicates aspects of choral speaking by utilizing a headset microphone to capture the user's voice, introduce a slight delay, and deliver the altered audio back into the ear pieces. This approach mirrors established Altered Audio Feedback (AAF) or Delayed Audio Feedback (DAF) techniques that have been employed for decades to assist fluency, prior to the proliferation of smartphones enabling continuous, all-day use.

Designed for extended use, iCanSpeak Live operates in the background on an iPhone, allowing users to benefit from its features throughout most of the day. To conserve battery life, the app can be turned off during periods when speaking is minimal or unnecessary.

The application incorporates six distinct exercises intended for use alongside a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) as shaping activities. Among these, the Breathing exercise includes a timer feature to ensure users practice diaphragmatic breathing with full inhalations.

For sound modification and articulation practice, exercises focus on Phonemes, Single Syllable Words, Multiple Syllable Words, and Sentences. These exercises access a database of over 2000 options categorized by sound class. Users can customize practice sessions by setting target durations for sounds and specifying the number of repetitions, facilitating tailored techniques.

The Choral Reading module offers sentence exercises that can be read aloud at user-selected rates. Additionally, it allows users to import text from the clipboard for immediate reading practice, providing flexible and customizable fluency training tools.
